[On] "The treatise says... with-outflows and outflow-free": this explains the two kinds of paths of abandonment. The possession (prāpti) of abandonment induced by the power of the uninterrupted path (ānantarya-mārga) is called 'capable of realizing abandonment'; the arising of the uninterrupted path to directly cut the possession of defilement is called 'capable of abandoning'. The path of liberation (vimukti-mārga) directly realizes the possession of abandonment and is called 'capable of realizing', but because it does not cut the possession of defilement, it is not called 'capable of abandoning'. Because the uninterrupted path possesses both capacities, it obtains the name 'path of abandonment'. This is of two kinds: with-outflows (sāsrava) and outflow-free (anāsrava).
