17.31

論「彼依究竟至名能斷善根」，答。由上品不善根能斷下下品善根，由斯故說上品不善根能斷善根。《正理》云「乘前為問，其理已成。謂此乘前所斷微善，即問能斷上不善根。前微善根既下品攝，後能斷者理上品收。故於中不勞徵難。」

On the Śāstra's stating: "That is based on culmination [...] are called capable of severing wholesome roots", this is the answer. Because superior unwholesome roots can sever inferior-inferior wholesome roots, it is on this basis said that superior unwholesome roots can sever wholesome roots. The Nyāyānusāra states: "Following the preceding as a question, its logic is already established: that is, following the preceding subtle wholesome roots that are severed, it asks about the superior unwholesome roots capable of severing them. Since the former subtle wholesome roots are subsumed under the inferior grade, logically those that subsequently sever them are included in the superior grade. Therefore, one need not labor to raise an objection against it."
