17.34

論「有餘師說至末易捨故」，敘異說。彼師意說：因其善根發得律儀，律儀是末、善根是本，末捨易本，故先捨也。

On the Śāstra's stating: "Other masters say [...] because the branch is easily abandoned", this recounts a divergent view. That master means: Due to those wholesome roots, one generates and acquires vows (saṃvara); the vows are the branches and the wholesome roots are the root; the branches are abandoned more easily than the root, and therefore they are abandoned first.
