論「豈不唐捐此施敬業」，外人難。若福既由自心生者，但起心供養，其福即生。何用施財及申敬禮？有德已滅，豈不唐捐？
The Śāstra's "Would not this act of giving and veneration be in vain?": the opponent objects. If merit indeed arises from one's own mind, then merely giving rise to the mind of offering would produce merit. What use is giving wealth and extending reverent salutations? Since the virtuous one has already passed away, would it not be in vain?
