On the treatise passage from "Herein, writing and engraving" to "taking the five skandhas as intrinsic nature": This clarifies that writing and engraving are identical in intrinsic nature. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 126, states: "Herein, 'writing' is not the characters formed, but whatever dharmas are capable of forming the characters; therefore it is called writing (this is the matter constituting the writing, not an unassociated dharma)." It also states: "Herein, 'engraving' is not the seal formed, but whatever dharmas are capable of making the seal. Because this can form a seal, it is called engraving." Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "It is not that the forms of the characters are called writing, nor that the engraved inscriptions are called seals; rather, it should be known that the karma forming the characters and the inscriptions on seals are what is called writing and engraving herein."
