On the treatise passage from "Next, calculating and composing" to "taking the five skandhas as intrinsic nature": This clarifies the intrinsic nature of calculating and composing. Calculating refers to reciting nine times nine is eighty-one, and the like; composing refers to skillfully arranging the five grammatical cases, and the like. The Vibhāṣā states: "Herein, 'calculating' does not mean the one, ten, hundred, or thousand being counted, but whatever dharmas are capable of calculating; therefore it is called calculating." It also states: "Herein, 'poetry' is not what is recited, but whatever dharmas are capable of composing the recitation. Because this can compose the recitation, it is called poetry ('poetry' is precisely 'composing')."
