19.87

論「毘婆沙師至提婆達多」，述有部釋。有部計離欲貪并斷見惑，起此見時暫退欲染，如提婆達多得根本定故能為變化，退色定故食闍王唾等。

On the text stating, "The Vaibhāṣikas... Devadatta": this presents the Sarvāstivādin explanation. The Sarvāstivādins hold that one separates from greed of desire and also abandons the defilements of views; when one generates these views, one temporarily regresses from the defilement of desire, just as Devadatta obtained the fundamental absorption and was therefore able to perform transformations, but regressed from the form-realm absorption and therefore ate King Ajātaśatru's spittle, and so forth.
