On the Śāstra's statement: "When seeing visible form, is it seen by one eye?": below there are five verses where, occasioning one discussion from another, he differentiates sense-faculties, sense-objects, and consciousnesses; this is not the section on analyzing the eighteen dhātus through various classifications. The first half-verse analyzes the meaning of seeing visible form with one eye or two eyes. The Vaibhāṣikas and others maintain that two eyes see simultaneously. The Vātsīputrīyas maintain that the two eyes see alternately, not simultaneously; but because their locations are adjacent and their operation is rapid, one considers them to see simultaneously. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 13, refutes this, saying: "If seeing were by one eye and not by two eyes, the various parts of the body also should not simultaneously perceive touch. Just as the two arms of the body, though separated by distance, can simultaneously perceive touch and produce a single body-consciousness, the two eyes are likewise: though separated by distance, what prevents them from simultaneously seeing visible form and producing a single eye-consciousness?"
