論「根是依故隨根說識」，謂根是依，色等非依，義如前說。由眼等根是所依故，隨眼等根名眼等識，不名色等識也。

On the Śāstra's: "Because the faculties are the bases, consciousness is designated according to the faculties": This means that the faculties are the bases, whereas visual form and the rest are not bases, the meaning of which is as previously explained. Because the eye and the other faculties are the supports (āśraya), the consciousnesses are named visual consciousness and so forth in accordance with the eye and the other faculties, and are not called consciousness of visual form and so forth.
