The Śāstra says: "Now there is a question: […] the seventh being the uncontaminated." This formulates the method with respect to the faculty of pleasure among the twenty-two faculties. In the Vibhāṣā of Kātyāyanīputra, formulating the method with respect to the twenty-two, it first inquires about the eye faculty, next about the consciousness taking an object directly, and then about the consciousness taking a cognitive object of an object. Here, formulating the method with respect to the faculty of pleasure, it first inquires about the faculty of pleasure, next about the consciousness taking an object directly, and then about the consciousness taking a cognitive object of an object. This is first inquiring how many anuśayas increase with respect to the faculty of pleasure. About to explain the meaning of the increase with respect to pleasure, one should first know that among the sixteen categories of phenomena, the faculty of pleasure applies to seven: namely, in the desire realm, it is abandoned only by cultivation, because it is associated only with the five consciousnesses; in the form realm, it comprises all five categories, because the faculty of pleasure of the third dhyāna is associated with the mental consciousness and applies to all five categories; the uncontaminated is the seventh, because entering uncontaminated contemplation based on the third dhyāna is associated with pleasure. In the formless realm there is only the sensation of equanimity, hence no faculty of pleasure. Therefore, among the sixteen categories of phenomena, it applies only to seven.
