The Śāstra says: "One should examine this consciousness […] all can take the faculty of pleasure as an object." About to explain the increase, one must first know how many phenomena among the sixteen categories the consciousness taking an object directly applies to. One should know that it applies to twelve: namely, four in the desire realm, excluding those abandoned by seeing cessation. This is because the faculty of pleasure applies to both the contaminated and the uncontaminated: the contaminated faculty of pleasure is associated with the five consciousnesses, and because it is subsumed under the truths of suffering and origination of the desire realm, it can be taken as an object by consciousnesses abandoned by seeing suffering and origination. Because pleasure is abandoned by the path of cultivation, it can be taken as an object by the mental consciousness abandoned by cultivation. And because the path belonging to dharma-knowledge based on the third dhyāna is subsumed under the truth of the path, it is taken as an object by anuśayas of the desire realm abandoned by the path that take the uncontaminated as objects. The truth of cessation is not the faculty of pleasure, and the defilements among those abandoned by seeing cessation are not associated with the faculty of pleasure, so those abandoned by seeing cessation cannot take the faculty of pleasure as an object. Hence, there are only four categories in the desire realm. All five categories of the form realm can take the faculty of pleasure as an object; because the faculty of pleasure applies to all five categories, all five categories can take it as an object. In the formless realm there are two, namely, those abandoned by seeing the truth of the path and by cultivation. Those abandoned by seeing the truth of the path refers to defilements that take the uncontaminated as an object, which can take it as an object; those abandoned by cultivation refers to the path belonging to subsequent knowledge based on the third dhyāna, namely, wholesome contaminated minds that can take the uncontaminated faculty of pleasure as an object, such as the contemplation of nonself and so forth. The uncontaminated is the twelfth, because it generally takes the faculty of pleasure of the three truths as an object.
