Regarding the passage in the treatise from "It is said in the treatise" to "therefore it is called subtle": This explains the word "subtle" (sūkṣma) in the stanza. The Nyāyānusāra says: "Therefore the venerable Ānanda said: 'I now do not know whether a mind of conceit has arisen toward my fellow practitioners of the religious life.' He did not say that there was none at all; because the mode of activity of the anuśaya of conceit is subtle, even he could not fully comprehend whether a mind of conceit existed or not, how much less could ordinary worldlings! The rest should be understood by analogy. Another explanation says: Because it also adheres and increases even with respect to a momentary infinitesimal part, it is called subtle."
