The Śāstra says: "'Secondly, [they are called anuśaya because] they increase in accord' up to 'because they increase torpor and dullness'"—this explains the second meaning in the verse. The Nyāyānusāra states: "How is it that the defilements increase in accord with the objective support and in association?"—this is the question. That the objective realm increases the anuśayas is beyond doubt and not asked about. That the anuśayas increase the objective realm and the associated factors is difficult to understand, hence the question. As previously explained, this refers to the previous explanation by an ancient master. Alternatively, just as an enemy seeks out faults and flaws, and like visual poison, one should know that defilements have the meaning of increasing in accord with their own objective support. Also, just as a red-hot iron ball can make water hot, and like contact poison, one should know that defilements have the meaning of increasing in accord with their own associated [factors]. The above text explains the objective support and association. The meanings differ and the analogies are distinct: the former is the objective support, and the latter is association. Both are like a wet nurse who causes an infant to grow up. A wet nurse can cause an infant to grow up and cause their skills to be gradually accumulated. The objective support and association cause the defilements to grow continuously and to be accumulated. The former clarified that defilements increase the realm and associated factors; this clarifies that the realm and associated factors increase the defilements.
