On the Śāstra's text, "For what reason does the non-returner... establish a single parijñā?": From here, half a verse presents the fifth [topic], explaining the aggregation of parijñā. The prose explanation can be understood from the text. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle sixty-two, says: "Furthermore, it is only where two conditions are fulfilled that one can aggregate parijñā in total: first, surpassing any one realm among the three realms; second, exhausting any one kind among the five destinies and four modes of birth. When obtaining the first two fruits, both conditions are lacking. When detaching from the defilement of the form realm, one condition is fulfilled while one is lacking. When obtaining the fruit of non-returner, neither condition is lacking: first, one surpasses the desire realm; second, one exhausts womb-birth in the human destiny. When obtaining the fruit of an arhat, both conditions are likewise fulfilled: first, one surpasses the formless realm; second, one exhausts apparitional birth in the deva destiny." The Nyāyānusāra says: "That which is spoken of as 'aggregating' has the meaning of uniting into one. If, through partial detachment from the defilements of the formless realm, one obtains the fruit of stream-enterer, then through complete detachment from defilement, one obtains the fruit of an arhat. 'Partial' refers to the path of seeing; 'complete' also encompasses the path of cultivation. If, through partial detachment from the defilements of the desire realm, one obtains the fruit of once-returner, then through complete detachment from defilement, one obtains the fruit of non-returner. (Partial detachment refers to the six grades of the path of cultivation; complete detachment refers to the nine grades of the path of cultivation.) If one partially or completely detaches from the form realm, in neither case does one obtain a fruit. Only in two places are the two conditions fully complete, meaning that when one obtains a fruit, one also immediately surpasses a realm. Therefore, for an arhat and a non-returner, their acquired cessations are aggregated and established as a single parijñā, because at that time they collectively give rise to an acquisition of a single flavor. At the time of the other two fruits, although the acquisition is of a single flavor, they have not yet surpassed a realm; at the exhaustion of attachment to form, although there is the surpassing of a realm, there is no acquisition of a single flavor. Therefore, in those positions parijñā is not aggregated, because both conditions must be fulfilled before one can aggregate in total."
