21.70

論「誑諂眠覆至憂慼心行」，此四通二行，故憂、喜相應，唯意地故非苦、樂相應。或時以歡喜心行諂、誑、眠、覆，即與喜相應。或時以憂慼心行此四種，即憂相應。《正理論》有餘師言：既說誑是貪等流故，但應歡行，不應說與憂根相應；是歡等流，不應慼故。又正誑時不應慼故，或應說誑是癡等流。

On the passage in the treatise, "Deceit, dissimulation, sleep, and concealment ... sorrowful mental activity": these four are common to both activities, and are therefore associated with sorrow and mental pleasure; because they belong only to the mental level, they are not associated with physical suffering or physical pleasure. Sometimes when practicing dissimulation, deceit, sleep, or concealment with a joyful mind, they are associated with mental pleasure; sometimes when practicing these four with a sorrowful mind, they are associated with sorrow. In the Nyāyānusāra, some other masters say: "Since deceit is said to be an outflow of attachment, it should only operate joyfully, and should not be said to be associated with the faculty of sorrow; being an outflow of joy, it should not be sorrowful. Furthermore, at the very time of deceiving, one should not be sorrowful, or else deceit should be said to be an outflow of delusion."
