The treatise says, "Third, because when their [objects] are abandoned […] they are abandoned along with them," which clarifies the third kind of abandonment. The Nyāyānusāra states: "Just as when a sick and weak person walks leaning upon a staff, when that staff is removed, they collapse along with it. For what reason is it said, among these afflictions to be abandoned, that when that which can cognize them is abandoned, their objects are abandoned—just as when direct realization (abhisamaya) arises taking the suffering and origin of the desire realm as object; and that when their objects are abandoned, that which can cognize them is abandoned—just as when direct realization arises taking the various cessations and paths as object? Although in reality both this and that are abandoned at that time, yet because what is to be abandoned has superior and inferior aspects, when the superior is abandoned, it is said that the inferior is abandoned along with it. That is, if unconditioned wisdom arises with respect to the object of that affliction and can serve as an antidote to it, that affliction is termed superior, and the remainder are termed inferior. For what reason does that affliction uniquely receive the name 'superior'? Because when unconditioned wisdom arises with respect to that object, it directs its exertion exclusively toward countering it. Based on this meaning, it can thus be said: in direct realization arising taking the suffering and origin of desire as object, among the afflictions and so forth to be abandoned by oneself, those taking one's own realm as object are the superior adversary; in direct realization arising taking the various cessations and paths as object, among the afflictions and so forth to be abandoned by oneself, those taking the unconditioned as object are the superior adversary. Due to the abandonment of the superior, the remaining inferior ones are abandoned along with it." Explanation: Abandonment upon seeing suffering and origin taking one's own realm as object is called abandonment through seeing their object, based on the fundamental. In actual principle, it also encompasses abandonment due to the abandonment of the object.
