23.78

論「若先捨已至大功用成故」，第十一明得非先也。以未曾熟修者，加行善根得來時起，非如餘有漏定無始熟修，大功用成故。所以重起之時，必大功用方能起也。《正理論》云「由先捨已，後重得時，亦大劬勞方得起故，於先所捨不欽敬故。」

On the Śāstra's statement: "If having previously abandoned them [...] because they are accomplished through great exertion": the eleventh [section] clarifies that the attainment is not from the past. Because for one who has not repeatedly cultivated them, the roots of goodness of application arise only when the attainment comes; they are not like other tainted absorptions that have been repeatedly cultivated since beginningless time, because these are accomplished through great exertion. Therefore, when giving rise to them again, it definitely requires great exertion before one can give rise to them. The Nyāyānusāra states: "Because after having previously abandoned them, when one re-attains them later, it is also only through great toil that one is able to give rise to them, since one lacked reverent respect for what was previously abandoned."
