23.98

論「麟角佛言至自乘覺故」，此明二人不可轉也。獨覺有二：一部行、二麟角。部行如聲聞，說有可轉。麟角如佛，不可轉也，一坐便成自乘覺故。此明二人不轉意也。

On the Śāstra's statement: "The rhinoceros-horn-like [pratyekabuddha] and the Buddha ... because of [attaining] the awakening of their own vehicle": this clarifies that these two persons cannot be converted. There are two kinds of pratyekabuddhas: first, those who live in a group; second, those who live like a rhinoceros-horn. Those who live in a group are like śrāvakas, and are said to be capable of conversion. Those who live like a rhinoceros-horn are like Buddhas: they cannot be converted, because in a single session [of sitting] they accomplish the awakening of their own vehicle. This clarifies the meaning of these two persons not converting.
