The Śāstra says: "This very [concentration] mentioned […] because it is the most supreme." This explains the name of the concentration. This concentration is firm and acute, like a diamond, because there is no latent defilement that it cannot break. Since [the lower ones] were already broken before, it does not break all of them—just as a great light can break subtle darkness, and can also break coarse darkness, not breaking subtle darkness alone. If [the coarse ones] have already been broken before by a lesser light, it only breaks the subtle and does not break the coarse. Among all defilements, the ninth grade of defilement to be abandoned by cultivation in neither-perception-nor-non-perception is the most subtle and difficult to abandon; since this uninterrupted path abandons this defilement, one knows that among all uninterrupted paths, this uninterrupted path is called the most supreme. Question: The view-abandoned defilements of neither-perception-nor-non-perception are also the most subtle among the nine stages, and the path of seeing can abandon them; should it not also be compared to a diamond? Answer: Those nine grades of defilement can be abandoned in a single grade; thus we know that the power of those defilements is feeble. Since the path of seeing is an antidote to feeble defilements, we know it cannot break all latent defilements. If it possessed the capacity to break them, when the path of seeing arose, what would prevent it from breaking the remaining defilements? Therefore, it does not receive the name 'diamond-like'. Furthermore, among defilements, those without concrete objects are easy to abandon; the path of seeing acts as an antidote to them, so we know it is not the supreme utmost; on this account, the name 'diamond-like' is not applied to it.
