24.8

論「何緣此無至未越界故」，此釋難也。何緣一來向，斷五定斷六？不還向斷八不斷九耶？此未越界，彼越界故極為障礙，故容斷八不斷九也。

The treatise says, "For what reason in this case is there no... because they have not crossed the realm." This resolves an objection: For what reason does one who progresses toward the once-returner, upon abandoning five, definitely abandon six, whereas one who progresses toward the non-returner may abandon eight without abandoning nine? In this case one has not yet crossed the realm, whereas in that case one crosses the realm, which forms an extreme obstacle; therefore it is possible to abandon eight without abandoning nine.
