The passage of the treatise "Because mind is absent, and because it arises relying on the body" is the answer. Because mind is absent, they are not called mental witnesses. Because the acquisition of the absorption of cessation arises relying on the body, they are called bodily witnesses. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 53, says: "Question: Why are they called bodily witnesses? Answer: Because with the body they witness the eight liberations, but have not yet exhausted all contaminants through wisdom; therefore they are called bodily witnesses. Question: Why are they called liberated through wisdom (prajñāvimukta)? Answer: Because through wisdom they have exhausted all contaminants, but have not yet witnessed the eight liberations with the body."
