The passage of the treatise starting with "In principle, it should actually be said... because the body is tranquil" is the treatise master's correction of the former explanation. In principle, it should actually be said: When that non-returner emerges from the absorption of cessation, at the moment of first emergence, having obtained what was previously unobtained, there is only a mind of consciousness while the body is tranquil; they then reflect: 'This absorption of cessation is the most tranquil, extremely resembling nirvāṇa.' Such reflective wisdom and the body witnessing the tranquility of the body are why they are called a bodily witness. This is because by emerging one attains witnessing the tranquility of the body, and because knowledge being present witnesses and attains the tranquility of the body; therefore they are called a bodily witness.
