The passage of the śāstra from “Abandoning what is to be abandoned through cultivation in desire” up to “is presently cultivated according to applicability” explains the differences in cultivation through activity among the three paradigms. When abandoning what is to be abandoned through cultivation in desire, during the nine uninterrupted paths and the eight liberation paths, because this abandons defilements of the desire realm, one does not use the four subsequent knowledges, nor knowledge of another's mind, exhaustion, or non-arising; because abandonment extends to both pure and impure paths, conventional knowledge is present. That is, in total there are six knowledges, namely the knowledges of the four truths, dharma knowledge, and conventional knowledge. Cultivation through activity in the ninth liberation path is also identical to these six knowledges; because its future cultivation differs, it is not explained here. When abandoning the upper seven stages, one uses subsequent knowledge, hence the four subsequent knowledges. Because dharma knowledges of cessation and the path can abandon the upper [defilements], they include two dharma knowledges. Because this is not the peak of existence, it includes conventional knowledge. Question: Why are the uninterrupted and liberation paths of the desire realm explained in the same place, whereas abandoning the upper seven stages is explained elsewhere? Answer: When abandoning desire, during the nine uninterrupted paths and the eight liberation paths, future cultivation is the same in that neither cultivates [knowledge of] another's mind; hence they are explained together in one place. When abandoning the upper seven stages, the uninterrupted and liberation [paths] both cultivate through activity four [knowledges], subsequent [knowledge], two dharma [knowledges], and conventional knowledge, totaling seven knowledges; because their future cultivations differ, they are explained separately. Knowledge of another's mind is not cultivated in uninterrupted paths, whereas the liberation paths cultivate knowledge of another's mind; hence it is as stated before.
