On the Śāstra's statement: "Those of the second concentration and so on ... also receive the name 'superior'": This explains superiority and inferiority. For instance, the desire-realm and other conjuring minds that are fruits of the second, third, and fourth concentrations, contrasted with the higher-stage conjuring minds that are fruits of the first, second, and third concentrations. If discussed in terms of the stage to which they are bound, the desire-realm and other conjuring minds are inferior to the conjuring minds of the first dhyāna, etc. But in terms of basis and practice, a lower-stage conjuring mind based on a higher stage is superior to a higher-stage conjuring mind based on a lower stage. This is because the desire-realm conjuration of the second dhyāna is superior to the first dhyāna's conjuration of the first dhyāna: although it is bound to the desire realm, it is based on the second dhyāna, and its upward reach from the desire realm extends to the second dhyāna; whereas for the first dhyāna's conjuration of the first dhyāna, because it is based on the first dhyāna, its upward reach extends only to the first dhyāna.
