28.138

論「此非不成至不能說過故」，經部通也。我前根品中，以立因云心之麁、細更互相違故不應俱，又汝於我前說之因不能說過，所以為喻得成。夫因明法，若不共許先立宗破訖，彼雖不許，非不成也。

On the Śāstra's phrase: "This does not fail [...] because you cannot state a fault": the Sautrāntika resolves [it]. In our earlier Indriyanirdeśa chapter, having established the reason (hetu) by saying that the grossness and subtlety of the mind are mutually contradictory and therefore should not be simultaneous, and furthermore since you were unable to state a fault in the reason I previously stated, the example therefore succeeds. In the methodology of logic (hetuvidyā), if something is not accepted in common but one has first established a thesis and refuted [the other's position], even though the other does not accept it, it does not fail.
