The treatise says: "Moreover, if it is admitted to be cognized by the six consciousnesses... the objection should be understood accordingly." This refutes [the view that it is] cognized by the six consciousnesses. Within the text there are two parts: first, contradicting reason; second, contradicting scripture. This is the contradiction with reason. Their school establishes that [the self] is neither identical with nor different from visible form and the rest. If it were cognized by visual consciousness, it would be different from sound, odor, and the rest, just as visible form is. If it were cognized by auditory consciousness, it would be different from visible form, odor, and the rest, just as sound is. The objection regarding its being cognized by the other consciousnesses should be understood in the same way.
