29.197

論「此經為顯至如聚如流」，論主通經也。此經文是以宿住智，緣過去生一相續身有色等事。若見過去實有我者，即應聖人起身見失。此經前文說無有我，或應誹撥言無此經。是故此經依總假我說有色等，如聚如流無別實物。

The treatise says: "This sūtra is to reveal... like an accumulation or a continuum." The author of the treatise clarifies the sūtra. This sūtra passage is based on knowledge of past lives (pūrvanivāsānusmṛti-jñāna) taking as its object the matter of having visible form and so forth across a single continuum of physical embodiment in past lifetimes. If one saw that there was a real self in the past, noble beings would incur the fault of giving rise to the view of self. Since the preceding text of this sūtra states that there is no self, they would have to reject it and say this sūtra does not exist. Therefore, this sūtra speaks of having visible form and so forth in reliance on an overall nominal self, which, like an accumulation or a continuum, is without any separate real substance.
