29.28

論「此加行位至能治四障」，述說伏治四障因也。「四無量根本」者，謂根本定，在此位無嗔等障。言治四障，在加行位。或在根本亦名治障，令已斷障得更遠故。

The Śāstra states: "In their preparatory stage... up to: they can counteract the four obstacles." This explains the reason for stating that they suppress and counteract the four obstacles. "The fundamental state of the four immeasurables" refers to the fundamental absorption; in this stage there are no obstacles such as ill-will. Speaking of counteracting the four obstacles applies to the preparatory stage. Or, in the fundamental state they are also called counteracting obstacles because they cause the already severed obstacles to become even further removed.
