The Śāstra states: "If toward sentient beings... up to: because it can currently be seen." This explains the differences among practitioners. All sentient beings are of two types: first, those who delight in seeking others' virtues; second, those who delight in seeking others' faults. All sentient beings also have two characteristics: first, the characteristic of virtue; second, the characteristic of fault. Even one who has severed the roots of good has characteristics of virtue; even a pratyekabuddha has characteristics of fault. One who delights in seeking virtue sees the virtue of an icchantika, because seeing the fruit-characteristic of an icchantika, one knows they have wholesome causes. One who delights in seeking faults sees the fault of a pratyekabuddha, because seeing their fruit-characteristic, one knows they have unwholesome causes. For one who delights in seeking virtues, cultivating love is easily accomplished, but not for one who delights in seeking faults.
