There are two kinds of self: first, the collection of the five skandhas conventionally designated as a self; second, either as identical to the skandhas or separate from the skandhas, separately apprehending an entity as a real self. The conventional self of the five skandhas does not contradict principle or scripture, so the treatise master does not refute it. Separately apprehending a real self contradicts both principle and scripture and obstructs the cause of renunciation, so the treatise master refutes it now. Therefore it is called the "Refutation of the Attachment to a Self". The preceding eight chapters extensively clarified its own tenets, where ultimate and conventional Abhidharma accords with the principle of non-self to select phenomena; now, to refute external attachments, it is clarified subsequently.
