On the Śāstra's statement: 'If one possesses the female faculty up to the five faculties of faith and so forth,' this explains the definite possession of eight faculties. If one possesses the female, male, or grief faculties, one is definitely physically present in the desire realm, and so the seven are as explained for pain. The eighth is the female, male, or grief faculty itself. One who has the female or male faculty may be detached from desire, so grief is not definitely possessed. One who has the grief faculty may be sexless, so the female and male faculties are not definitely possessed. If one possesses the five faculties of faith and so forth, one definitely possesses eight faculties. Because mind, vitality, and equanimity exist in all, one definitely possesses these three faculties. When an ordinary person is born in the formless realm, they lack the seven material faculties and the four sensations; and because they are an ordinary person, they do not possess the three anāsrava faculties. Thus only eight faculties are definite, while fourteen are indefinite.
