30.120

論「或識於境至說鐘鼓能鳴」，更釋識能了也。如因鐘、鼓有鳴，說鐘、鼓能鳴。因其前識為後識因，能了境故，說識能了。就因說也。

On the Śāstra's statement: "Or [just as] with respect to an object, consciousness [...] bells and drums are said to be able to sound": This further explains the ability of consciousness to cognise. Just as because of a bell or drum there is a sound, and one says "the bell or drum can sound," so because the preceding consciousness serves as the cause for the subsequent consciousness which is able to cognise the object, one says "consciousness can cognise." It is spoken of in terms of its cause.
