30.38

論「理必應爾至如經廣說」，更引經非受法器不為說也。若答為有，恐執常我；若答為無，恐生斷見，故佛不答。

On the Śāstra's statement: "In principle it must be so [...] as explained extensively in the sūtra": Further citing the sūtra to show that because they were not suitable vessels for the Dharma, He did not teach them. If He had answered that it exists, He feared they would cling to a permanent self; if He had answered that it does not exist, He feared they would give rise to annihilationism; therefore the Buddha did not answer.
