[On the phrase of] the treatise, "From 'The treatise says' up to 'ground of defilement,'" [this] explains the meaning of "minor" (parītta). First, they are abandoned only through cultivation (bhāvanā-heya); second, they arise only in the mental consciousness ground (mano-vijñāna-bhūmi); third, they are associated only with ignorance (avidyā); fourth, each manifests individually. The great wholesome ground phenomena (kuśala-mahābhūmika) are not associated with any defiled mind; the name "defilement" (kleśa) is used to exclude these phenomena. Although vitarka and vicāra extend to defiled minds, because they lack the four characteristics, they are not called minor ground-of-defilement phenomena. Although the great ground-of-defilement (kleśa-mahābhūmika) and great unwholesome ground (akuśala-mahābhūmika) [phenomena] are also associated only with ignorance, because they lack the [other] three characteristics, they cannot be called "minor." Although the two, conceit (māna) and doubt (vicikitsā), arise only in the mental ground, are associated only with ignorance, and each arises individually, they are not abandoned solely through cultivation; because they lack this one characteristic, they cannot be called minor. Although the single [factor] regret (kaukṛtya) is abandoned only through cultivation and arises only in the mental ground, because it is not associated only with ignorance, even though it arises individually, it is not called minor. Although the single [factor] sleep (middha) is only in the mental ground, because it lacks the three characteristics, it is not called minor. Although the two, greed (rāga) and anger (pratigha), are also associated only with ignorance and each arises individually, because they lack two characteristics, they are not called minor. The preceding four grounds are all called "great" (mahā-), whereas this single ground does not obtain the name "great": the ground-extending phenomena (mahābhūmika) are called "great" because they are pervasive of all minds; the great wholesome ground phenomena are called "great" because they are pervasive of all wholesome minds; the great ground-of-defilement phenomena are called "great" because they are pervasive of all defiled minds; and the great unwholesome ground phenomena are called "great" because they are pervasive of all unwholesome minds. Furthermore, the phenomena of the above four grounds all arise concurrently, and are therefore called "great."
