On the Śāstra's [words], "Having explained non-shame […] means excluding the first three alternatives": this explains the second pair, the distinction between love (priyatā/preman) and veneration (gaurava). Faith associated with joy is called "love"; that is, delighting in dharmas that are worthy of joy and esteem. Tainted attachment to external objects is also called "love"; that is, the love of stained clinging. Thus, loving one's wife, children, and so forth is the love of stained clinging; loving one's teachers, elders, and so forth is the love of faith. Because [the mind] is associated with joy when taking the truths of cessation and the path as objects, it is both faith and love. Because it is associated with revulsion when taking the truths of suffering and origination as objects, it is faith but not love. Because tainted love is greed, it is love but not faith.
