論「有說信者至謂有敬等」，述異說也。此師意說：信是忍許有德，由此為先方生愛樂，故信非愛，信因愛果故。敬謂敬重，以慚為體。

On the Śāstra's [words], "Some say that faith […] means having veneration and so forth": this relates an alternative explanation. This master's intended meaning is: faith is assenting to the existence of virtues, and only with this as precedent does delight arise; therefore faith is not love, because faith is the cause and love is the fruit. Veneration means reverent respect, taking respectful shame (hrī) as its intrinsic nature.
