[On the passage in] the treatise, from "However, it is said in some places" to "definitely cannot cultivate": Here the Sautrāntika harmonizes the sūtra. Above, the Sautrāntika stated: if there are seeds, there is the contiguous capacity to produce fruit. Furthermore, it is said: when all ordinary worldlings have not yet aroused the two paths, they all possess defilements; since the sūtra states that if one possesses greed one cannot cultivate the four applications of mindfulness (smṛtyupasthāna), the noble dharmas would have no way to arise. Therefore, harmonizing the sūtra, it is said: That [sūtra] speaks of those who are attached to the defilement of greed and cannot renounce it, which is called "possession." While they are attached to craving, they definitely cannot cultivate the four applications of mindfulness. This refers to the stage of intense greed as "possession"; it does not mean that merely possessing seeds prevents cultivation.
