The Śāstra says: "Furthermore, bound dharmas […] possession is of four kinds." This is the heading of bound and unbound. The dharmas possessed are of four kinds: the bound of the three realms make three, and unbound dharmas make four. The possessions capable of possessing them are also of four kinds, likewise as stated above. Furthermore, the dharmas possessed are of two kinds: first, conditioned, namely the dharmas of the three realms and the noble truth of the path; second, unconditioned, namely the two kinds of cessation. The possessions capable of possessing are exclusively conditioned. The dharmas possessed are also of two kinds: first, defiled (sāsrava), namely the dharmas bound to the three realms; second, undefiled (anāsrava), namely the noble truth of the path and the two cessations. The possessions capable of possessing are also of two kinds: first, defiled, namely bound to the three realms; second, undefiled, namely the noble truth of the path. Because dharmas bound to the three realms are conditioned, their possessing possessions, following what is possessed, are bound only to the three realms; whereas unbound dharmas encompass the unconditioned. The possession of non-analytical cessation follows the bound status of the physical body on which it relies. The possession of analytical cessation follows the path capable of cutting off [defilements], and because the path encompasses the defiled and the undefiled: if it is a defiled path, it is bound to the form or formless realm; if it is an undefiled path, following the path it is unbound. Because the possession of non-analytical cessation follows the body, it encompasses being bound to the three realms. Therefore, possessions of bound dharmas are of only three kinds, while possessions of unbound dharmas encompass all four kinds.
