On the passage in the śāstra from “Herein, regarding a phenomenon…” to “…that which is able to destroy is cessation”: This explains their distinct names. The Nyāyānusāra states: “Herein, ‘arising’ refers to a distinct phenomenon that is the unobstructed superior cause at the stage of the arising of formations, because it is capable of drawing them forth and causing them to arise. ‘Capable of drawing forth’ means that when they arise, this phenomenon is able to act as a superior condition for them. Although all occurrences of formations are called ‘arising,’ this name ‘arising’ is established solely in reliance upon the unobstructed superior cause at the stage of the arising of formations. ‘Duration’ refers to a distinct phenomenon that is the unobstructed superior cause by which formations, already arisen and not yet destroyed, draw forth their own fruit. ‘Difference’ refers to the cause that makes the preceding phenomenon of the continuum of formations differ subsequently from its prior state. ‘Cessation’ refers to a distinct phenomenon that is the superior cause for the destruction and cessation of co-arising formations.”
