On the treatise passage: "However, the sūtra's repeated statement … indicates what is wholesome and unwholesome": this is the third [section], clarifying the intent behind the sūtra's repeated statement of "conditioned". When the sūtra says "the conditioned characteristics of the conditioned", the former phrase points to the essence of the three characteristics, while the latter phrase indicates that the preceding three characteristics are themselves conditioned. It is not like knowing the presence of water because a white heron is there; nor does it intend to indicate wholesome or unwholesome aspects of the conditioned—such as a maiden having fine and long hair, arms that reach past the knees, and so forth, as auspicious signs, while coarse hair, cumbersome arms, and the like are inauspicious signs.
