The Śāstra states: "Are not these letters... also called parts of writing?" This is an analysis through question and answer. Are not these letters precisely the curved material shapes on paper called characters? This is the question. The answer states: it is not to reveal the material letters of writing that the unassociated phonemes were created; rather, it is to reveal the unassociated phonemes that material written characters were created. Relying on these material characters, one remembers and retains the unassociated phonemes and transmits the material characters to other lands and to future generations; therefore, the unassociated phonemes are not identical to written characters.
