On the Śāstra's statement: "The faults regarding speech manifesting name should be analogized to its generation": Having earlier refuted that speech produces name, he now analogizes this to refute that speech manifests name. 'Generation' means the name is produced by sound; 'manifestation' means the name's substance previously existed and is merely revealed by speech. The above refutes the Sarvāstivādin view that there is a name separate from speech; below refutes that there are phonemes separate from speech.
