The Śāstra states: "Such is termed the characteristic of the fruition of ripening (vipākaphala)." This is the general conclusion. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: "Does not the entity of the fruition of ripening also take the entity of the fruition of ripening of a preceding moment as its cause of similar kind (sabhāga-hetu)? For it is the result that flows from that preceding ripening (niṣyanda-phala). Thus one should also state that what is born from the unrecorded is of the nature of flowing from a cause. Why then state only that it is born from the recorded and is not of the nature of flowing from a cause? There is no such fault. In its entity as a fruition of ripening, by reason of a cause of similar kind its characteristics can be confused and mixed; but by reason of a cause of ripening (vipāka-hetu), its characteristics are without confusion. Therefore it is only said that it is born from the recorded. From this it is to be understood by analogy that it is not of the nature of flowing from a cause; for the outflowing fruition and its cause are similar, hence there is confusion, whereas the fruition of ripening and its cause are distinct, hence there is no confusion." Examining this intention now: although the entity of the fruition of ripening is produced from a cause of similar kind, a co-existent cause (sahabhū-hetu), an efficient cause (kāraṇa-hetu), and a cause of ripening, nevertheless, being produced from a cause of similar kind is the meaning of an outflowing fruition; being produced from a co-existent cause is the meaning of a virile fruition (puruṣakāra-phala); being produced from an efficient cause is the meaning of a predominant fruition (adhipati-phala); and being produced from a cause of ripening is the meaning of a fruition of ripening. That is to say, this very dharma that is a fruition of ripening has the four senses of fruition: outflowing, virile, predominant, and ripening. The meaning of fruition of ripening is not the meaning of outflowing, virile, or predominant fruition, because designations are established by taking each specific meaning respectively. Although the senses of virile and predominant are general, terms with a general sense are used to designate distinct dharmas. The causes are also like this: the entity of the dharma is one, yet causes differ according to their functions. This will be further distinguished below.
