On the Śāstra's statement, "As for these twelve minds arising mutually from one another": below, four [lines forming] one stanza explain how the twelve minds alternately emerge and enter. There are, in brief, five cases of mutual arising of minds and mental factors across the three realms: first, within its own realm; second, from a different realm; third, continuous rebirth; fourth, guarding absorption; fifth, the uncontaminated. As for mutual arising within its own realm: a preparatory wholesome mind of its own realm does not arise from minds of fruition, deportment, or craft, while all other minds can mutually arise. This is with the sole exception of the mind of transformation, because it only arises mutually with the preparatory wholesome mind of the form realm. Second, as for mutual arising from a mind of a different realm: an unobscured unmanifested mind of the three realms does not arise immediately following a mind of a different realm, with the sole exception of the desire-realm transformation mind. Nor does it give rise to a mind of a different realm, except for the desire-realm transformation mind and the dying mind. An innate wholesome mind does not give rise to a mind of a different stage, except at the position of continuous rebirth; nor does it arise from a mind of a different stage, with the sole exception of the mind guarding absorption. A preparatory wholesome mind, directed upward, only produces preparatory wholesome [minds]; directed downward, it produces [minds of] the desire realm, both innate wholesome and others. What it arises from is lower and upper preparatory wholesome [minds]. Third, as for the mind of continuous rebirth: only the innate wholesome, unwholesome, obscured unmanifested, fruition unmanifested, and deportment minds serve as the dying mind. Only the unwholesome and obscured unmanifested minds serve as the mind of continuous rebirth. Directed upward, it excludes unwholesome and obscured unmanifested [minds]. Directed downward, it conforms to whatever is present in that realm. Fourth, as for the mind guarding absorption: the desire-realm innate and preparatory wholesome [minds] are said to arise following a form-realm defiled mind. For guarding absorption in the form realm, the preparatory wholesome mind arises following a formless-realm defiled [mind]. Fifth, as for the mutual arising of uncontaminated minds: it is as explained in the text below.
