7.43

論「即前第一至第四句」，前第一句者，是定第二等剎那等及出定心，此從心等無間生，亦次定後起故。為今第三句。前第二句者，謂初剎那定上四相，及有心位心、心所上四相，此非心等無間生，非次定後起。故為今第四句。

On the Śāstra's statement: "That which was the former first [alternative corresponds to the third here], up to the fourth alternative": the former first alternative refers to the second and subsequent moments of meditative absorption and the mind emerging from absorption; because these are born in immediate succession to mind and also arise directly following absorption, they constitute the third alternative here. The former second alternative refers to the four characteristics upon the first moment of absorption, and the four characteristics upon the mind and mental factors in states with mind; because these are not born in immediate succession to mind and do not arise directly following absorption, they constitute the fourth alternative here.
