論「應作四句至第二句」，答也。准前第三句是從等無間緣生亦心無間，此第一句是從心等無間生，非定無間。初剎那定，及心位皆從心等無間生，非次定後起故。是今第一句也。前第四是不從心等無間緣生，亦非心無間。二定第二剎那及出定心上四相，此皆非心等無間，是次定後起故。是今第二句。

On the Śāstra's statement: "One should frame the four alternatives … the second alternative": this is the reply. In accordance with the previous third alternative, which was born from an equal-and-immediate condition and also immediate to the mind, this first alternative is born from the mind as equal-and-immediate, but not immediate to the absorption. The initial kṣaṇa of absorption and the state of mind are both born from the mind as equal-and-immediate, but because they do not arise immediately after the absorption, they constitute the present first alternative. The previous fourth was neither born from the mind as an equal-and-immediate condition nor immediate to the mind. The second kṣaṇa of the two absorptions and the four characteristics on the mind emerging from absorption are both not equal-and-immediate to the mind, but because they arise immediately after the absorption, they constitute the present second alternative.
