On the passage in the śāstra from "Due to reaching the stage of the realm" to "therefore there are three grades": This is the second master's explanation. In the Sūtra on the Destinations of the Seven Virtuous Persons, one who enters nirvāṇa in the intermediate state is divided into three, with three stages in total during the middle of the lifespan: first, before defiled ideation arises, it is called the stage of reaching the realm. "Realm" (dhātu) is another name for the causal seed; when the seed has not yet arisen, it is called reaching the realm. The Nyāyānusāra says: "When the seed has not yet become active, it is called reaching the realm; this is one of keen faculties." This is the first type of one who enters nirvāṇa in the intermediate state. "Or the stage of ideation": this is the subsequent time when defiled ideation arises. The Nyāyānusāra says: "When that ideation first becomes active, it is called the stage of ideation; this is one of medium faculties." This is the second type of one who enters nirvāṇa in the intermediate state. "Or the stage of investigation": the Nyāyānusāra says: "Through the force of afflictions, the mind engages in various investigations regarding objects; this is called the stage of investigation; this is one of dull faculties." This is the third type of one who enters nirvāṇa in the intermediate state.
