The treatise says: "In order to obtain various... this state is named grasping (upādāna)." This presents the intrinsic nature of the ninth link, upādāna. "Running about in all directions to seek" excludes what precedes. "This state is named upādāna" directly presents the intrinsic nature of upādāna. According to the Vibhāṣā: "At the time of the five links, the mind and mental factors are defiled; the remainder are defiled and undefiled." Therefore we know that when defilement arises it is named the link of upādāna, whereas other states are not. Craving is also like this: because one is first able to run about seeking wealth and sexual objects, it is named upādāna. Fascicle 23 of the Vibhāṣā quotes the Prajñaptiśāstra: "What is named upādāna? It means running about in the four directions on account of the three cravings, shrinking neither from toil nor weariness though treading through many perils, yet not having aroused good or bad karma for subsequent existences; this is named the state of the upādāna skandhas."
