The commentary states: 'Up to: because of the nature of cause and effect': this explains the verse. That these twelve limbs can give rise to subsequent ones is the meaning of 'cause'; because this cause serves as a condition to originate subsequent effects, it is called 'conditioned origination' (pratītyasamutpāda). The meaning of arising from previous ones is 'effect'; because all these effects arise from conditions, they are called 'conditionally arisen' (pratītyasamutpanna). In this way, all twelve limbs have both the meaning of cause and effect, and therefore both designations—'conditioned origination' and 'conditionally arisen'—are established.
