On the Śāstra's statement: "Some say that after contact ... conditioning contact, feeling arises": this recounts the explanation of the elder of the Sautrāntika school. This master means: consciousness of the subsequent moment arises based on the faculties and objects of the preceding moment. In the first moment there are faculty and object; in the second moment consciousness arises, and precisely at this time the three unite in contact. This contact takes the union of the three as its essence, having no separate dharma apart from them. Only upon reaching the third moment does feeling arise.
